CBD oil is a cannabis extract which is made using a compound in the cannabis plant known as cannabidiol or CBD. CBD is not psychoactive when it is absorbed through the endocannabinoid system, meaning, that CBD does not produce the ‘high’ or euphoric feeling that is commonly associated with cannabis. The high feeling is believed to be attributed to a different compound found in the cannabis plant known THC. CBD has variety medical and therapeutic properties and is known to treat a wide variety of conditions such as epilepsy, depression, anxiety to name a few.

In order to gain access to CBD oil in Saskatchewan, it is recommended that you be prescribed by a physician or qualified healthcare practitioner. This is due to the Licensed Producers reserving a large proportion of their CBD products strictly for medical cannabis patients. Once you have a prescription, you can fill your prescription for your CBD oil, or capsules, directly from your Licensed Producer and have the medication delivered right to your door.

On top of the Canadian Cannabis Laws listed in the Cannabis Act, provinces also have their own laws and regulations to help govern the productions, usage, distribution, packaging, and sales of cannabis and cannabis-related products and services within their province. 

In Saskatchewan, the provincial government created their policies in order to work to protect the public’s safety and health called Saskatchewan’s Cannabis Framework. They are also working to eliminate the black market while ensuring their citizens make informed decisions and are educated. 

Consumption and Possession of Cannabis in Saskatchewan

In line with the legal drinking and tobacco purchase age in Saskatchewan, the minimum age for cannabis purchases and consumption is set at 19 years old. Anyone 19 or older is allowed to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis in public if they do not have a medical cannabis prescription. Public cannabis consumption is prohibited across the province. Cannabis can be consumed in private residences and homes.

Driving under the influence of any type is illegal. If driving under the influence of cannabis or consuming cannabis in a vehicle, one will face steep fines possibly jail time. When driving or transporting cannabis in Saskatchewan, it must be sealed in its original sealed packaging, within the legal limit amount, and out of reach of the driver and passengers. 

Cannabis consumption in the workplace has not changed since legalization and all employees must be aware of their employer’s drug & alcohol policies.

Medical cannabis is governed and regulated by the Federal government, and separate from recreational laws in Saskatchewan. 

Public possession limits for patients are the lesser of 150 grams or a 30 day supply of their prescription. This does not include the 30 grams they are allowed to have of recreational cannabis. Patients must be prepared to show they are legally allowed to possess more than 30 grams if requested by law enforcement by showing their registration document from a Licensed Producer or certificate from Health Canada.
Medical cannabis can only be purchased through Licensed Producers, licensed by the Federal Government of Canada via Health Canada. Medical cannabis is often less expensive than recreational cannabis, and as a patient, you will be provided with a personalized treatment plan for strain selection and dosing.  Medical cannabis is tax deductible and may also be covered by insurance.
